2007 Otago Provincial Championships ResultsAUGUST 4/5 2007. A crowd of about 70 shooters from Otago, Canterbury, Southland and Waikato (good to see you here Dave) turned out for this year’s Otago Provincials at the Dunedin Clay target Club. Conditions were windy for a start, then calm and overcast on the Saturday and the Sunday saw very still conditions with light rain and mist for the most part. Generally conditions were not too bad for shooting although the wind affected the skeet and minis somewhat. Just two possibles were recorded in the skeet and that wily experienced performer Ewen Pirie, mastered the conditions best to retain his title from last year. The other possible went to local member Wayne Larsen. The minis saw just the one possible, Allan Booth from Timaru being the lucky (his own words) shooter. Jan Manson won the shoot off between the 14s. Conditions and scores were improving for the doubles and three 19s were recorded along with four 18s. Lindsay Rodgers took out the HOA ahead of Gavin Searle and Natalie Rooney. The Triples also had three possibles recorded and a very popular win went to Charlie Stewart of Canterbury. Colin Waghorn and Stu Cunningham chased him for the title in the shoot off. At the end of the day Colin Waghorn and Lindsay Rodgers led the high gun on six down. The light and misty rain on the Sunday was cleared away by a light southerly during the extended single rise shoot off and lots of good scores were shot in the still conditions. Single rise resulted in lots of red chalk with 24 possibles from the field of 59 hopefuls, a very high percentage. This resulted in a shoot off of 203 targets before local Dunedin President elect Wayne Larsen headed off Timaru’s Mike Sime. Kelvin Gutsell went at 149 targets for 2nd A grade and Phil Harraway at 134 for 3rd. Ten possibles were seen in the Points Score and a very meritorious win went to Natalie Rooney, her first Provincial title but likely not her last. Gavin Searle, father Gary Rooney and Denis Nyhon filled the A grade placings. Single Barrel went to Southland’s Phil Harraway ahead of Wayne Larsen, Len Hurley and Lindsay Rodgers the other possible scorers, in a relatively short shoot off. The High Gun saw Colin Waghorn (Gorge Road) maintain his form of Saturday and he collected his first provincial championship with a two point margin ahead of Gavin Searle who took out A grade after a shoot off with Lindsay Rodgers. Colin is another shooter who is highly likely to continue to improve his winning percentage and take many more provincial and higher titles. Well done Colin a great result.
